Jo’s Best Pie Making Tips

If you are thinking of entering, Jo has a few tips when it comes to clever pie creations:

  • The most important thing to remember when making decorative pies is to chill your pastry. Start with cold butter and water, chill the pastry before rolling, chill it after cutting, and chill the entire pie before baking. This will help keep the pastry neat and tidy and will reduce distortion as it bakes.
  • If you haven’t done pie art before, start with cutting shapes from your pastry offcuts and use them to add a bit of flair to your pie lid. Flowers are always popular, but if you don’t have cookie cutters, hand cut leaves can add a rustic charm.
  • It’s about having fun – if your design doesn’t turn out how you’d hoped, you can always try again (and in the meantime, enjoy eating the pie you just made!)
  • The dough hook included in the VonShef Stand Mixer is perfect for dense mixtures such as short pastry.
